![]() ![]() “Tangerine” is full of allusions to other books and writers. ![]() Also unannounced is Lucy’s plan to pry Alice out of her marriage and carry her off for a series of globe-trotting escapades like the ones the two of them imagined together back in their clapboard house in Vermont. ![]() Alice Shipley, psychologically fragile since the deaths of her parents in a house fire when she was an adolescent, is married to John, who does something vaguely secretive for “the government.” Lucy Mason, a scholarship girl who bonded with Alice as a fellow-orphan during their freshman year at Bennington College, has ditched her job typing manuscripts for a publisher in New York and appeared without advance notice on Alice’s Moroccan doorstep. This is the craving satisfied by Christine Mangan’s début, “ Tangerine” (Ecco), the story of two women, former college roommates, who are reunited in Tangier in 1956. The pleasure of reading novels comes in assorted flavors, and one of them, certainly, is nostalgia. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() But it is also just the type of event that Erik Larson excels at re-telling and he doesn’t disappoint with Dead Wake. The story could be a relatively straight forward one, easy to breeze by and miss. ![]() And, as we now know, the Lusitania fell victim to the German submarine U-20 on off the Scottish coast, rapidly sinking into the cold but calm sea, killing 1,198 passengers and crew. ![]() The Lusitania’s story gets interesting though, and is the subject of Dead Wake, as World War I begins heating up and German U-boats begin indiscriminately torpedoing ships, regardless of nationality or purpose. Not as large as the infamous Titanic, the ship was every bit as opulent, making trans-Atlantic crossings glamorous for the well-heeled, and bearable for those with shallower pockets. The Lusitania was a British cruise liner operated by Cunard Lines, launched in 1906. Most have heard of the ill-fated RMS Lusitania, but few of us probably know the real story. That said, I just finished Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitaniaby Erik Larson and felt compelled to share it with all of you. I’ve spent a ton of time this year reading and prepping for the podcast and the reviews have fallen away, but they remain important to me and I plan to be more active in that area in 2022. Friends, it’s admittedly been too long since I’ve written a proper book review. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The threat to put Damen onto the cross to break him is a first painful reaction from Laurent to cause Damen as much pain as possible in retribution for killing Auguste (though Damen doesn’t actually make it onto the cross at this point due to the Regent’s intervention). He’s meeting his brother’s killer and the trigger point for all of the subsequent abuses and grief Laurent has experienced since that day at the Battle of Marlas. At this point, Laurent has basically had the last six years of suffering hurled into his face without warning. ![]() When Laurent and Damen first meet, Damen’s blond fetish rears its head and he’s instantly transfixed by Laurent, not yet knowing who he is. Laurent’s initial behavior is following this expectation. When Kastor sends Damen into slavery, specifically to Vere, it is with the expectation that he will suffer, that he will be abused and humiliated. Re-reading reminded me that to begin with all of Damen’s suffering is from his brother’s hand. It was easy to forget after reading a while that Kastor even really existed, because the presence of Laurent in the books simply dwarfs him. Captive Prince is a wholly different experience this time around. Reading this series with the knowledge of what happens introduces an entirely new perspective. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh, and I love the book titles Escargot imagines with a snail for a protagonist-my favorite being "Harry Gastropodder and the Chamber of Salads" -) Escargot is just the most adorable character and makes me miss our pet snails (believe me, I never thought I would find real snails cute but they totally are once you get to know them!)Įscargot wants to cook something new, so he’s at the library looking for a French cookbook. I love the interactive element and even my nine-year-old came over to listen as I read it aloud to my youngest and they were both giggling. ![]() ![]() Trent is broody, he is mean, he is powerful, he is hungry for love and he is PURE ALPHA PERFECTION!
